MUZOO: The opening of the MUZOO in La Chaux-de-Fonds is scheduled for this year. The project, created by the merger of the Natural History Museum of La Chaux-de-Fonds and the Zoo du Bois du Petit-Château, is unique in Central Europe from a scientific, cultural and tourist point of view. The MUZOO will provide visitors with a comprehensive view of our natural world and its fauna and flora.
MUZOO: MUZOO: A new museum is born
The Natural History Museum will be located in a renovated building within a 10-minute walk from the train station. It will enrich the visitors’ minds with its diverse collection and focus on regional flora and fauna. It includes about 2,650 mammals, 4,900 birds, 900 amphibians, 1,100 reptiles, 66,000 insects and 210 fish in the form of skeletons, skins and fragments. Exhibits of geology, paleontology and mineralogy also belong to the collection of the Natural History Museum.
The new museum will have an exhibition area of 600 square meters, with additional temporary exhibitions of 130 square meters. At the same time, the vivarium, which is currently under renovation, will amaze young and old. Bird spiders and snake species such as vipers and boas have their home there. The vivarium will be integrated into the tour of the future museum and will also house turtles, fish and lizards.
In addition, a multipurpose room, classroom, and visitor center with store and cafeteria will provide space for social interaction. On warm spring and summer days, MUZOO guests will be able to enjoy their coffee on the terrace, which will also serve as an interface between the museum and the zoo.
A walk through the animal world and nature
A walk through the park leads to the enclosures of deer, ibex, wild boar and mouflon. A few steps further, lynxes find their place. However, these are not the only animals to which MUZOO offers a home. The zoo is also home to foxes, otters, raccoons and a variety of birds. The highlight for children is usually the petting zoo, followed by the playground with water games and fountains in summer.
